The Pengcheng Charity Awards have received much attention and many positive accolades since their launch in April 2018. At the end of August, a total of 107 organizations, individuals and projects were shortlisted for the reward by an independent jury composed of 15 members including representatives from the Guidance Unit, Organizing Unit, Municipal Party, Municipal People's Congress, Municipal Consultative Conference, the media and other industry experts.

Dr. Chen Hongtian received Shenzhen's highest level award, the Pengcheng Charitable Individual Gold Award. Only ten individuals in Shenzhen have ever received such an honor. Based on official statistics, during 2016 and 2017 Dr. Chen Hongtian donated 46.55 million yuan to charity. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Chen Hongtian said that as a Shenzhen-born entrepreneur, he is very grateful to the reforms that have taken place here. Many know that Shenzhen is the most economically developed city in China, but are not aware of the outstanding philanthropists that the city has produced. Zhai Meiqing, an entrepreneur from Shenzhen, won the Carnegie Medalat the same time as Bill Gates and Li Ka-shing. Mr. Wang Wei and Mr. Ma Huateng have also made unpublicized contributions to charity. Finally he expressed his wish that entrepreneurs in Shenzhen and Hong Kong continue to carry out their charity work shoulder to shoulder.
